IDRISI Andes Selected by Lincoln Institute of Land Policy for Use in GIS Training Program
9/13/06

Clark Labs is pleased to announce that the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy has selected the IDRISI Andes GIS and Image Processing software for inclusion in their GIS Applications for Urban Development training program. The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy is a nonprofit educational institution focused on improving the quality of public debate and decisions in the areas of land policy and land-related taxation. The Institute offers a variety of training programs, undertakes research and demonstration projects, and collaborates with other institutions on issues of land taxation, land market operations, land regulation, property rights, and the distribution of benefits from land development.

The seven-week course introduces the concepts of GIS and explores applications related to implementing land policies for urban development in the particular context of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Although urban development applications rely heavily on vector GIS tools, Diego Erba, an instructor for the program, incorporated IDRISI to show course attendees the breadth of spatial analysis possible with raster GIS.

“Participants use IDRISI to develop Digital Land Value Models (DLVMs) and simulate incremental value changes following public or private investment, along with its impact on urban financing. A DLVM can also be combined with cadastral maps to enhance understanding of property values or combined with satellite images and aerial photographs to create 3-D flyover views. Extrapolated information is used to help define land policies, especially land taxation updates.”

Course attendees include public-sector individuals from 19 countries. Specifically, students learn about alphanumeric databases, urban base mapping (topography, geodesy, and photogrammetry) and remote sensing, managing raster and vector data in urban analysis, and urban cartograms. The GIS Applications for Urban Development training course is one of a series of distance education courses recently developed for Lincoln Institute’s Program on Latin America and the Caribbean to address the high demand for training.

Clark Labs is based within the world-renowned Graduate School of Geography at Clark University and is the developer of the IDRISI Andes GIS and Image Processing software.
